HPPR’s Impact at the Diversity Education Institute

In April, Hispanic Professionals in Parks and Recreation (HPPR) proudly took part in the 5th Annual Diversity Education Institute, hosted at the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s Irwin Center. The event brought together professionals from across Illinois for a day of learning, collaboration, and meaningful conversations centered on celebrating diversity and better serving all communities through parks and recreation.

HPPR is honored to be represented in leadership by Board Member Juan Acevedo, who currently serves as a Board of Regents member and Chair-Elect. His role in shaping the Institute’s direction underscores HPPR’s commitment to elevating Hispanic voices and promoting inclusive practices across the profession.

A special thank-you to Dr. Mariela Fernandez, an HPPR member and respected scholar, for delivering a powerful session on how research can guide more equitable access to public spaces and improve community representation. Her insights inspired attendees to reflect on how their work can truly reach and benefit all populations.

We’re also grateful to the many HPPR members who attended and contributed their perspectives throughout the day. Your presence and engagement continue to advance our shared mission: ensuring parks and recreation serve, reflect, and celebrate every community.
